My Routine Took a Vacation Too

Hello from Albania. Today's newsletter is a bit shorter than usual. Between flights, ferries, long dinners, and unpredictable WiFi, I haven't had much time to devote to writing or research this week. Still, I wanted to stay on schedule because consistency matters to me, and this week ended up teaching me something worth sharing.

I usually have a plan.

Workouts mapped out. Meals timed a certain way. Supplements lined up like a tiny science experiment I run on myself every day.

It's not obsessive. It's just how I've learned to manage RA. The structure feels reassuring.

This week, almost none of that happened the way I expected. Travel has a way of loosening the routines we depend on. The days have been unstructured, meals have stretched for hours, and I've skipped more workouts than I've done. For most of my adult life with RA, that combination would have made me nervous.

It didn't this time.

I've been surprisingly relaxed about it.

Control Isn't the Only Way to Feel Safe

Living with RA teaches you to hold on tightly. You learn your triggers, your timing, your routines, because predictability feels protective. The tighter the routine, the safer the day seems.

But control and safety are not always the same thing. Sometimes the effort of constantly managing every variable becomes more exhausting than the disease itself.

Away from my usual schedule, I loosened my grip without really meaning to. The week held fewer workouts, more restaurant meals, and far more flexibility than I usually allow myself. The body I often treat as though it needs constant management didn't seem to mind nearly as much as I expected.

What This Trip Reminded Me

I'm not saying we should abandon structure forever. I need it too, and I'll be back to my normal routine within a few days of getting home. What this trip reminded me, though, is that flexibility isn't the same thing as falling apart.

Missing a workout doesn't erase months of consistency, and a few restaurant meals don't undo years of good nutrition.

An imperfect week doesn't mean you're failing at managing your RA.

Sometimes resilience looks less like discipline and more like trust. Trust that your body can handle a little deviation, that one unusual week doesn't change the trajectory, and you don't have to earn health all over again every Monday morning.

Loosening the grip is part of the work too. Your nervous system needs evidence that not everything has to be perfectly controlled.

Hit reply and tell me: when was the last time you gave yourself permission to loosen the grip a little?

I read every response.

THE JOINT Your weekly dose of RA wellness The Evidence Edition I'm Soaking My Way Across Turkey Turkey has given me plenty of chances to test one of the oldest remedies for aching joints: hot water. Between the thermal springs, mineral pools, and hammams, I've spent this trip soaking, steaming, and scrubbing my way across the country. After a full day of walking, lowering myself into warm water feels incredible. But spa culture doesn't stop at "this feels good." Mineral springs and mud baths...

I was sure it was going to be a hard fall that left me flat on the ground. Instead, I popped right back up quicker than a bunny. Once I recovered from the ordeal, I had an irritating thought: This is why I do core work. I hate Pilates, planks, sit-ups, and anything resembling a core workout. The minute an instructor announces, “Time for...

I love the payoff at the top, the ache in my legs, and the way the world looks from a different vantage point. These days, aching knees and painful wrists make the climb more complicated. About halfway up, I usually start wondering whether it was a good idea. Then I reach the top. I am still tired and uncomfortable, but I am also genuinely happy...
